I have the same problem on my Huawei P20. It can not reliably get data from the sensors, especially TP10. On the same device the official Muse app doesn't report any problems. I'm a bit worried that you said the the official app might get the same unreliable data. On my Nexus 5X everything is fine with the same Headband. I am an Android developer myself and I can help with resolving this issue if this is possible.
