Feature request: Integration of the GARMIN watch into the Mind Monitor

Post by Peter Gamma »

The GARMIN watch together with a POLAR OH1 is near to a break-through to become a low-cost research device. The POLAR OH1 can be used instead of a professional ECG device as far as accuracy is concerned:

https://the5krunner.com/2019/04/06/pola ... OH1_Review

Integration of the GARMIN watch into the Mind Monitor could be attractive for meditators. The heart rate sensor of the Muse headband cannot be used by third party software developers, since there is no Muse SDK available for it. The Garmin watch could replace it.

Live-stream of the GARMIN watch to MATLAB, Python or other desktop applications is also near to a break-through too, but needs developement:

Integration of the GARMIN watch together with the POLAR OH1 sensor and the Muse headband or other low-cost ECG devices into the Mind Monitor and LabstreamingLayerSupport as a standard for live-streaming could make the Mind Monitor to an attractive application for low-cost research devices. An Adinstruments real-time data aquisition systems costs serveral 1000 $. A POLAR OH1 could reach a similar signal quality for about 10% of the price.

Replace the Muse headband with the ADS1299 Performance Demonstration Kit from Texas instruments:

and add a Greentek EEG Cap:

so the Mind Monitor becomes the word-champion for meditators.

Then, connect the setup through LSL to BCILAB:

no desktop software development is necessary anymore.

This would be a new version of the Mind Monitor for scientists to meditate with the Muse headband and the GARMIN watch.

For scientists and non-scientists who can deal with BCILAB.

James Clutterbuck, when you put LSL for the Muse headband on your suggestion list, can you put LSL for the GARMIN watch there too, to use the GARMIN watch as an external heart rate sensor for the Muse headband which can be added to the other Muse headband sensors in BCILAB?

The Muse 2 has a PPG, so I'm going to try and get the data from that. I don't have the garmin device so I can't do development for it. Also the Muse has problems when other bluetooth devices are connected (such as AirPods), so if the Garmin also connects over bluetooth, this could impact the Muse data.

Currently, the only GARMIN watch which can be streamed is a Fenix 5 luxury watch. I don t have one neither. Dave Does Demos (Microsoft UK) wrote, he didn't spend much time working on compatibility, and when he get time he ll try to add in the Vivoactive 3 again (he failed before):

https://forums.garmin.com/developer/con ... venthubapp

I suppose, the Vivoactive 3 is currently the best selling Garmin watch and is affordable. Paring of the GARMIN watch goes over bluetooth to their own GARMIN connect app, and in Daves solution from there to the Microsoft Azure cloud.

It would be great to pull out the GARMIN data somewhere on the path. I don t know whether this would interfere with the Muse headband bluetooth.

Is there no standard pairing bluetooth connection for the Muse headband? Do not most devices allow to pair multiple devices?

All phones can pair to multiple devices. That's not the issue. The issue is the amount of data that the Muse tries to send over the bluetooth connection. It pretty much maxes it out.

GARMIN connects over bluetooth 4.0. Is there aleady saturation with the Muse data stream? Is there no bandwith left for some GARMIN data?
